Stainless Steel Fiber (SSF) is widely used as a filler in thermoplastics to increase the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of otherwise EMI transparent plastics. However, there is a concern regarding the abrasion characteristics of SSF containing compounds on extruders and tooling used during the injection molding process.
To understand this issue more clearly, a wear study was conducted comparing SSF filled Nylon 6,6 (PA66) and Polycarbonate (PC) compounds to Glass Fiber (GF) filled control compounds of PA66 and PC. Sample specimens were molded and then evaluated using an ASTM D-3702 test apparatus and the results summarized in this white paper.
